Literacy Celebrated with a Character Parade at Sacred Heart Elementary
In a recent "Literacy Day" celebration at Sacred Heart Elementary School, each homeroom picked a favorite book to present to the school. Students dressed as characters in the book and participated in a special Character Parade. Grades 4, 5 and 6 gathered in the back of the school to cheer the first, second and third grade students at the beginning of the parade, and then joined in at the end of the parade. The Character Parade started in the gym, continued around the outside of the school, through the front doors and into the auditorium. Each homeroom then presented a brief description of the book and the characters!

Lenten Service Project
The Sacred Heart Elementary School Student Council voted this year to dedicate our Lenten Service Project to aid the refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan. The Darfur refugees have urgent emergency needs for protection, safety, clean water and medical care. Sacred Heart students will be implementing a number of fundraising activities in school to raise money for humanitarian aid for the refugees in Darfur. To help raise student awareness of the conflict and the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan that has led to the urgent need for humanitarian aid, Emily Cunningham, a junior at Cardinal Spellman High School offered to give a presentation to Sacred Heart students. Emily is the cousin of a Sacred Heart Elementary School student, and is the founder of a STAND chapter (a student anti-genocide coalition) at her school.

Emily's PowerPoint presentation and question and answer session with the students was a powerful message and helped students understand the conflict in Sudan, the genocide and atrocities being committed against the people in the region, why the world community should care, the policies needed to help solve the crisis, and the need for fundraising for humanitarian aid for the Darfur refugees.

Christmas Concert
The tradition of sharing the gift of music was continued when students at Sacred Heart Elementary School performed the Annual Christmas Concert for their parents and relatives on December 19th.  Under the direction of the school music teacher, Mrs. Lee Meier, the students sang a mix of beautiful choral arrangements and well known holiday favorites. The entirety of the first, second and third grades participated, with each grade providing special performances throughout the concert.  In addition to singing, members of the third grade rang out melodious notes on specially tuned hand-bells in key with some of the carols. The second graders contributed through the medium of dance.  Both of the dances were choreographed by Mrs. Meier and contained elements of traditional English and Spanish folk dances.   The heart of the performance was a re-enactment of the Nativity story by members of the first grade.  Children played the parts of Mary, Joseph, and the Three Kings, as well as angels, shepherds, and stable animals.  The narration, straight from the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament, was expertly read by a third grade student.  “This concert is an opportunity for the children to give their parents a priceless gift – their love – and lend to Christmas its true meaning,” said School Principal, Sister Ann Therese.  She concluded the “standing ovation” performance with words of praise for all of the participants and their families.
