Literacy Celebrated with a
Character Parade at Sacred
Heart Elementary
In a recent "Literacy Day" celebration at Sacred
Heart Elementary School, each homeroom picked a favorite book to
present to the school. Students dressed as characters in the
book and participated in a special Character Parade. Grades 4, 5
and 6 gathered in the back of the school to cheer the first,
second and third grade students at the beginning of the parade,
and then joined in at the end of the parade. The Character
Parade started in the gym, continued around the outside of the
school, through the front doors and into the auditorium. Each
homeroom then presented a brief description of the book and the
characters!
Catholic Schools Week 2008
Celebrated at Sacred Heart Elementary School
"Catholic Schools Light the Way" was the theme for
Catholic Schools Week this year and Sacred Heart Elementary
School celebrated the last week in January with some traditional
favorite activities. The highlight of the week this year was the
official "kick-off" of our special Lenten activity with a
presentation by Emily Cunningham to raise awareness of the
genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. Read more about
our Lenten service project below.

Mis-Match Day
One of the students' favorite days is Mis-Match Day
when they are able to reflect their spirit and creativity with
"wild and crazy" outfits. Each grade level voted for the most
creative mis-matched outfits in their grade!
Grade 6 Day of Reflection
Sixth grade students celebrated their Day of
Reflection with Reverend Frank Breen, MM on Tuesday, January
29th. The day began with prayer, followed by Fr. Breen's
presentation about stewardship of the environment and the need
to value and protect our natural resources. After lunch, the day
concluded with Mass for the students celebrated by Fr. Breen.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation
Sacred Heart faculty and staff were treated to a
special luncheon on Thursday, thanks to parent volunteers who
supervised the classrooms.
Lenten Service Project
The Sacred Heart Elementary School Student Council
voted this year to dedicate our Lenten Service Project to aid
the refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan. The Darfur refugees
have urgent emergency needs for protection, safety, clean water
and medical care. Sacred Heart students will be implementing a
number of fundraising activities in school to raise money for
humanitarian aid for the refugees in Darfur. To help raise
student awareness of the conflict and the genocide in the Darfur
region of Sudan that has led to the urgent need for humanitarian
aid, Emily Cunningham, a junior at Cardinal Spellman High School
offered to give a presentation to Sacred Heart students. Emily
is the cousin of a Sacred Heart Elementary School student, and
is the founder of a STAND chapter (a student anti-genocide
coalition) at her school.
Emily's PowerPoint presentation and question and
answer session with the students was a powerful message and
helped students understand the conflict in Sudan, the genocide
and atrocities being committed against the people in the region,
why the world community should care, the policies needed to help
solve the crisis, and the need for fundraising for humanitarian
aid for the Darfur refugees.
Library Trivia Contest
Miss Elliott, the Sacred Heart Elementary School
Librarian, recently announced the winners of the Library Trivia
Contest for the first half of the year. The winner of the
Reference Trivia is a second grade student, and the Literature
Trivia "title" goes to a fourth grade student! Congratulation to
both trivia winners! The Trivia Contest is open to all students
and the more you play, the better your chance of winning! The
contest continues until the end of the year, when two more
winners will be announced!
Christmas Concert
The tradition of sharing the gift of music was
continued when students at Sacred Heart Elementary School
performed the Annual Christmas Concert for their parents and
relatives on December 19th. Under the direction of the school
music teacher, Mrs. Lee Meier, the students sang a mix of
beautiful choral arrangements and well known holiday favorites.
The entirety of the first, second and third grades participated,
with each grade providing special performances throughout the
concert. In addition to singing, members of the third grade
rang out melodious notes on specially tuned hand-bells in key
with some of the carols. The second graders contributed through
the medium of dance. Both of the dances were choreographed by
Mrs. Meier and contained elements of traditional English and
Spanish folk dances. The heart of the performance was a
re-enactment of the Nativity story by members of the first
grade. Children played the parts of Mary, Joseph, and the Three
Kings, as well as angels, shepherds, and stable animals. The
narration, straight from the Gospel of Luke in the New
Testament, was expertly read by a third grade student.
“This concert is an opportunity for the children to give their
parents a priceless gift – their love – and lend to Christmas
its true meaning,” said School Principal, Sister Ann Therese.
She concluded the “standing ovation” performance with words of
praise for all of the participants and their families.

rehearsal for the Christmas Program!
Student Council Installation
The Sacred Heart Elementary School student body,
faculty and parents gathered on September 28th to celebrate the
installation of the 2007-2008 Student Council Officers and
Representatives. The Student Council "Oath of Office" was
administered to the officers and representatives, followed by
the "pinning" ceremony. Sister Ann Therese "pinned" the
officers, who in turn, "pinned" the 4th, 5th and 6th grade class
representatives. The Student Council President was presented
with the ceremonial gavel by Principal Sister Ann Therese, and
in her brief remarks, the President expressed her hopes for the
year. The ceremony was brought to a close with the singing of
"Shout to the North". Congratulations to the Student Council
Officers and Representatives!
Early Childhood Center
Dedication Ceremony
Approximately 100 guests gathered on Sunday,
September 30, 2007 to dedicate and celebrate the opening of the
new Sacred Heart Early Childhood Center. Sacred Heart
Elementary School Principal, Sister Ann Therese Connolly, CDP,

spirit" of the Sisters who started the Congregation's
educational ministry in Plymouth and Kingston, acknowledging
that it was the "courage, hope, and dreaming" of the Sisters
that "transformed their visions into realities". A blessing of
the building was given by the Very Reverend Bryan Parrish,
Pastor of Holy Family Church in Duxbury. Key participants in the
Early Childhood Center building project were recognized,
including DesignPartnership of Cambridge, Inc., Bufftree

while the mission of spirituality and education continues, so as
to create a better world".
Outdoor

Affairs at Stonehill College. In the annual tradition, students
