History
In 1947, the Congregation of the
Sisters
of Divine Providence was welcomed into the Archdiocese of Boston by
Richard J. Cushing, Archbishop of Boston.
In the fall of 1949, the Sisters
opened Sacred Heart Schools, Grades K-7, on Court Street in Plymouth, MA
with an enrollment of 148 students. In 1953, the Sisters opened their
first newly constructed school building, housing the Junior High (grades
7-8) and High School (grades 9-12) on Route 80 in Kingston, MA. The second building
constructed is used primarily as
a residence for the Sisters, on the Sacred Heart campus, and formerly housed
the Kindergarten program. In 1963,
Sacred Heart Elementary School (grades 1 through 6) moved from the
Plymouth location into a new school that was the third building
constructed as part of the expanded Kingston campus.
In subsequent
years, a Student Activity Center and Gymnasium was constructed adjacent to
Sacred Heart High
School. State-of-the-art athletic fields have been added over the years at
both the High School and the Elementary School. Sacred Heart Early
Childhood Center, a newly-constructed early learning center for Kindergarten
and Preschool was built adjacent to the Elementary School and opened in
September 2007. The Sacred Heart Schools
complex on
Route 80 is owned and operated by the Sisters of Divine
Providence. The enrollment of the combined schools exceeds 1,100 students
who reside within a 30-mile geographic radius of the schools.
